How to Play Alien Invaders

Alien Invaders brings the golden age of arcade gaming to your browser! Command Earth's last defense ship against waves of descending alien forces. Dodge their attacks, pick off their formation, and survive the relentless assault. The fate of humanity rests on your trigger finger!

  • Movement: Use LEFT/RIGHT Arrow Keys or A/D to move your ship horizontally. On touch devices, your ship follows your finger position. Stay mobile to avoid enemy fire!
  • Shooting: Press SPACE or Click/Tap to fire lasers upward. Each shot can destroy one alien. Rapid fire is enabled — hold space or tap continuously for maximum firepower.
  • Enemy Waves: Aliens march side-to-side in formation, gradually descending with each pass. As you destroy more aliens, remaining ones speed up. Clear all aliens to advance to the next, more difficult wave.
  • Bonus UFO: A high-value UFO occasionally flies across the top of the screen. Shoot it for bonus points ranging from 50 to 300! It appears randomly, so keep an eye on the top of the screen.

Strategic Defense Tactics

Surviving the alien onslaught requires more than fast shooting — it demands formation management. Target the outermost aliens first. Destroying edge aliens widens the formation's travel path, giving them farther to march before changing direction. This buys you crucial time to pick off the remaining invaders.

Master the "column clearing" technique: focus fire on one vertical column at a time. Removing entire columns creates gaps in the alien formation that their shots can't pass through, creating safe zones where you can position your ship without fear. During later waves, prioritize aliens at lower rows — they're closer to your ship and pose the most immediate threat.

The Invasion That Changed Gaming

Released by Taito in 1978, Space Invaders didn't just launch a game — it launched an industry. The game was so phenomenally successful in Japan that it caused a temporary shortage of 100-yen coins! It grossed over $3.8 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing entertainment products of all time.

The iconic alien designs were inspired by H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" — octopus-like creatures, crabs, and squids. The game pioneered the concept of progressive difficulty: as you destroy enemies, the remaining ones speed up, creating natural tension. This simple but brilliant design pattern influences game difficulty curves to this day.
